The best way to keep up to date with Basford United Football Club

United win at Gedling

2 years ago By Simon Ball-McQueen

Basford United had a convincing 3-1 win at East Midlands Counties League side Gedling Miners Welfare in their latest pre-season game.

Daryl Thomas, one of several new faces, got the team off to an excellent start with a goal inside the first minute.

Thomas fired home from close range after Blair Anderson created problems for the home side with a surging run.

Basford looked dangerous going forward and twice rattled the framework of the goal before Dion Meikle headed in Anderson's corner to double the lead after 24 minutes.

The second half saw a flurry of substitutions by both sides, which did nothing for the flow of the game but on the hour another Anderson corner proved decisive, this time it was Courey Grantham who headed in.

Several Basford Academy players were given game time and useful experience of senior level football.

Kelvin Mushambi pulled one back for Gedling with eight minutes remaining and as the home side finished strongly Saul Deeney was forced into a couple of good saves.

The coming week sees the final two pre-season games, both at Greenwich Avenue, with Ilkeston on Tuesday (7.45) and Brighouse Town on Saturday (3.0).

Where next?

United Pipped At The Post By Young Stags Side Basford United were narrowly beaten by their Football League neighbours Mansfield Town, losing 2-1 at Greenwich Avenue on Tuesday evening.
Basford round off the season in disappointing style but what a brilliant season Despite the immense disappointment that debut in the Evo-Stik concluded in disappointing fashion last night, it should not detract from a fine season.
