United bow out of the Emirates Cup at the 1st stage (Video Now on Line)

By Match reporter

A disappointing night for Basford as Step 5 Staveley came to Greenwich Avenue & duly sealed a place in the 2nd qualifier after a big cup upset.

Key Staveley goals at crucial stages of the game, far too many missed chances & Basford denied the services for 85 minutes of one of this seasons best players Matt Thornhill on current form, set the scene on a bitterly disappointing & costly night for the club.
The dismissal of Thornhill not the going behind from the spot was undoubtedly the key moment of the game & left United with an absolute mountain of 10 v 11 & a 0-1 deficit to turn round (Headline Photo intentional Ball to hand or hand to ball? ). The penalty decision looked uncertain as Thornhill threw himself at the ball, & whilst penalty how much intent to warrant the dismissal was clearly uncertain the match official who on the face of it got many calls on the night wrong was clear in his thoughts & it was an instant dismissal. The visitors thought took advantage & duly went ahead from the spot kick by Baskerville & no doubted gained so much confidence.

Basford then engaged in an absolute shootout which whilst creating opportunities left vast gaps down the flanks that the visitors ruthlessly exploited as the impressive Baskerville ruthlessly finished on 25 minutes for 0-2.
Still United both before & after the goals had a vast number of chances that were not converted but so did the visitors & Kieran Preston had to be on top form.
2nd period 10 man United gave it a real go & after Zayn Hakeem missed a great chance, opened his account on 61 minutes for 1-2 the tide looked to have turned firmly to United & Fenton, Reid, Thomas all had glorious chances to bring the tie level.

The young visitors though always looked capable of exploiting the gaps & duly put the game to bed on 73 min via a fine cross & header by Greenfield so that was that. The final indignity of the night saw Nat Watson dismissed on 81 minutes & will mean deprived of his services for 3 crucial Evo-Stik games.

Basford have the perfect opportunity to get this one out of the system as back in action tomoro v Matlock Town home 7.45pm ko.
When the fixtures came out certain ones had a definite circle put round them and this one is one that should capture the imagination of the Notts/Derby's public and it should be nothing less than a great game.

Admission £9/£6/£2 & once again our excellent family of 4 for £15 offer is available to supporters of both camps & neutrals.

Whilst the disappointment of the FA Cup is likely with us now it does not detract that its he Evo-Stik NPL Premier division that is our main focus for the season.

All the very best to Staveley & hopefully much more success for them in this years competition & their celebrations were top draw both on & off the pitch.

Final point a fabulous gate Fri & hopefully the fans will continue to flock to Greenwich Avenue as its a fabulous affordable spectator offering.
