Basford United 0 Lincoln United 1.
Basford groundsman Neil Swift had the Mill Street Playing Fields pitch looking in superb condition on Tuesday evening, ready for its first Evo-Stik League Division One South action and despite Martin Carruthers men making some good positive forward advances in the open 45 minutes, it was Lincoln who took the lead thanks to a Scott Ruthven strike on 17 minutes.
A commanding performance from Basford was to follow in the second half, with the visitors limited to just one real chance, which home keeper Saul Deeney was able to spectacularly turn away from his goal on 64 minutes.
As the clock ticked on, Carruthers’ team pushed harder and harder for the equaliser, with Daryll Thomas shooting wide of the Lincoln post on 67 minutes before Jermaine Hollis shot agonisingly wide of the same upright with six minutes remaining.
A last minute fumble from Lincoln keeper Sam Vince almost let in a desperate home attack but alas it wasn’t to be for Basford, who now look to quickly return to winning ways, as Stockbridge Park Steels visit the Avenue, this coming Saturday (22nd August), with a 3pm kick-off.
