Martin Carruthers’ new-look Basford squad showed tremendous character to not only stay into today’s difficult Evo-Stik South opener at Gresley but then to snatch the points late in the day via a gem of a free kick from substitute Ben Hutchinson on 83 minutes.
Showing a superb defensive resilience Basford had to withstand a lot of pressure from the home side with United keeper Saul Deeney making a string of top class saves throughout.
The highlights of a tentative opening period from both teams saw Basford defender Rob Darkin make a wonderful last-ditch tackle to deny a clear opportunity, whilst Deeney then clawed a goal bound effort from Ryan Smith round the post to ensure the half ended goalless.
The second half saw the Basford goal under a barrage of early pressure, with the home side unable to convert some clear cut openings and denied by post and bar. However, still in the game going into the latter period, it was Basford’s new signing Hutchinson who spotted the narrowest of gaps to bend home a brilliant free kick on 83 minutes, snatching the points and stunning the home crowd.
United manager Carruthers was understandably delighted with the three points and after a difficult pre-season, being deprived of the services of so many players through injury & illness, this was a great victory.
Basford now have a home Evo-Stik South opener on Tuesday evening, when Lincoln United visit Greenwich Avenue for a 7.45pm kick-off.
