The game hinged on the dismissals of Basford's Billy Bennett and Corey Grantham in the three minutes before half time.
Up to then the game had been a tight and even affair, with Ciaron Kilheeney giving the home side the lead after 23 minutes, heading in Scott Metcalf's cross.
In a game of few chances Ruben Wiggins-Thomas went closest for Basford with a shot against the outside of a post whilst Grantham created problems on the right.
The sendings off changed everything. First Bennett was adjudged to be last man after a 42nd minute foul.
That seemed harsh, but there was no argument about the dismissal of Grantham on the stroke of half time for a retaliatory kick.
The second half saw a rearguard action from Basford which was breached twice by Kilheeney, with a 55th minute shot and ten minutes later with a header that seemed to take a deflection off Rob Darkin.
A cross cum shot from Robbie McNicholas that troubled home keeper Karl Wills and a shot from Wiggins-Thomas that flew narrowly wide were the only attacks of note from Basford as the game drifted to a conclusion.
