David Boafo, Josh Thornton and Ashley Grayson were all recalled after the previous Tuesday’s defeat to Sheffield FC, whilst Tyrell Shannon-Lewis was given the nod to start ahead of Reuben Wiggin-Thomas, who was dropped to the bench alongside Rob McCormick.
There was no place in the squad for midfielder Gino Kelleher, whilst twins Jake and Jack Wood were both named amongst the substitutes, alongside youngster Ryan Oates.
An open first half saw numerous chances for both sides, the first following a good cross from Cory Gratham but Ben Hutchinson’s header flew just wide after 8 minutes and Rob Darkin followed suit just three minutes later.
The hosts then had two good chances to open the scoring on 13 and 17 minutes but both efforts failed to trouble Saul Deeney in the United goal.
The chances kept on falling at both ends and Shannon-Lewis’ long-range effort just flew the wrong side of the crossbar on 18 minutes before Thornton’s powerful shot was aimed straight at the Diamonds’ keeper on 22 minutes, followed four minutes later by Rhys Myers’ wide header.
Deeney was then called into action with two fine saves in the later stages of the half and after the injured Shannon-Lewis had to be substituted in the last minute, it was his replacement Wiggins-Thomas who grabbed an opener, with his first touch of the game, in first half stoppage time.
Into the second half, Basford got off to the worst possible start, almost conceding from a shot which rolled across the front of Deeney’s goal on 47 minutes before then succumbing to Diamonds from the resulting corner, to make the scores level.
To their credit, after a shaky start, United quickly regrouped and regained the lead on 57 minutes, after Myers headed home from a corner kick for his second goal of the season.
Grantham then doubled Basford’s advantage six minutes later, after he was given space and time to continue his run down the right flank before cutting into the box and slotting the ball home.
Now with the two-goal cushion United took their foot off the gas, tried to keep possession of the ball and hit their hosts on the break and they did this very well but did have to deal with two more Diamonds attempts to get a foothold back in the game. These included a close-call with a header flying just over their bar on 71 minutes before then striking Deeney’s horizontal five minutes later, when the ball bounced back down near to the goalline but all Rushden protests of a goal being scored were waved away by the officials.
Basford’s reward is a First Round home tie against Grantham Town on the 31st October but their thoughts now turn back to the League, with a trip to Leek Town on Saturday (10th October), 3pm kick-off.
