United central defender Mason Rowley weighed in with a fine brace to register both Basford goals on the day. Basford will be disappointed that having come from behind to lead they failed to put away the battling visitors.
On a bitterly cold wet day United manager Martin Carruthers had to shuffle his pack, With Saul Deeney missing academy youngster Jake Wood came in in goal. Central midfielder Kyle Dixon was out injured and joined an increasing injury list. Under 21 youngster Jack Duffy was also ruled out through injury. Robbie McNicholas re-joined the team after missing the last couple of weeks.
With United starting slowly the visitors drew 1st blood with Harry Ioannou neatly flicking home on 18 minutes.
United were not at a fluent best in the 1st period but still delivered some really fine crossing that on another day could have seen Courey Grantham and Fabian Smith register goals, but on this day the efforts were either saved or placed over the bar.
As the half approached United finally find a way back into the game as central defender Mason Rowley got on the end of a deep free kick to head Basford level at the interval.
Basford came out with far more purpose 2nd period and Mason Rowley registered his 2nd as he was in the right place to finish on 57 minutes and give Basford its 1st lead on the day. The lead though was short lived as Market Drayton drew level on 64 minutes . Understand it was there manager Martyn Davies who showed his lads the way with a brilliant strike from 20 yard that despite getting a hand on Jake Wood couldn’t keep it out. It could have been worse for Basford as Davies found himself clear on goal but denied by a brilliant save from Jake Wood.
Basford finished the game pushing for the winner and Eugene Bopp and Anthony Griffiths- Junior saw efforts fire over or just wide. With 5 minutes to go Courey Grantham put over a fine cross for which Ash Grayson met with a downward header that was brilliantly saved by Market Drayton keeper Ashely Rawlins. With keeper having a great game he finished the game with another fine tip over from a Stuart Hendrie effort. This proved the last significant action and United had to be satisfied with a point in a 2-2 draw.
Basford now have a free week as no doubt Martin Carruthers will look to get players back off the fitness table and on to the pitch for the run in. With positive vibes about returns for full back Billy Bennett and with Jermaine Hollis finally back in the country and Kyle Dixon likely 1 week away from a return then Basford will look to consolidate a play off place.
