Substitutes for Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw at Tividale, Billy Bennett and Rob Darkin both started the game in place of Rhys Myers and Rob McCormick, who both dropped to the bench.
New signing Eugen Bopp and Blair Anderson were both added to the team, replacing the absent Ben Hutchinson and Jermaine Hollis, whilst Umar Ismael joined Gino Kelleher on the substitutes bench, alongside young striker Harry Wakefield, who featured in the first team squad for the first time this season.
Basford were able to open the scoring on 9 minutes with the first real chance for either side, when after some initial good work on the right flank by Cory Grantham, some great footwork skills from Bopp exposed the Belper defence and Anderson was set-up for perhaps the easiest goal he’ll score all season, as he forcefully side-footed the ball home.
On 29 minutes, a brilliant ball from Bennett sent Wiggins Thomas clear through on goal but a visiting defender recovered well to make the last ditch tackle just before the prolific striker was about to pull the trigger.
The closest the visitors came in the first half was a shot from the edge of the box from Belper’s #11, which failed to trouble Saul Deeney’s goal, going wide of the Irishman’s left-hand post.
Basford’s second goal came three minutes before the break, when after another good run and ball from Grantham on the right-hand side, he set-up Wiggins-Thomas off on a run, which ended with the marksman finishing coolly into the bottom right corner of the Belper net to give his side a two-goal advantage at half time for the first time this season.
The second half started positively for United, who were clearly not resting on their laurels, with half-chances for Grantham and Anderson inside the opening ten minutes.
Belper’s only real chance of the half came on 55 mins, when their centre forward shot just wide after pouncing on a wayward defensive header.
Wiggins-Thomas then effectively ended the game as a contest on 70 minutes, after being sent through on a one-on-one with the keeper and despite the Belper custodian getting a touch on the forward’s low shot with his legs, the ball still found its way into the net to make it 3-0.
Now well in control, Basford were happy to see the game out with more solid defending and by keeping possession of the ball for large spells of the remaining twenty minutes, coasting to the win, which sees them now unbeaten in four consecutive games.
United now look to continue their run, when they travel to face Daventry Town next Saturday, with a 3pm kick-off.
