Basford earn a good point at Leek Town

Honours ended all level today at 2-2 between Basford & Leek Town in the lates

There was just one change in the starting eleven from last week, Wiggins-Thomas returning to lead the attack with Tyrell Shannon-Lewis dropping to the bench.

The home side got off to the perfect start when after eight minutes Tim Grice's low free kick gave them the lead.

Basford were forced back on the defensive as Leek made the early running and they soon had the ball in the net again but the whistle had blown for offside. Saul Deeney then pulled off a fine save from Niall Maguire.

The closest Basford came to scoring came on the half hour when Wiggins -Thomas pounced on an under -hit back pass but home keeper Chris Martin was able to deflect it out for a corner.

With Blair Anderson prompting down the wing, United came forward and Ben Hutchinson had the ball in the net but was denied by the linesmen's flag.

The scores were level two minutes into the second period, Ruben
Wiggins-Thomas scoring from close range after Josh Thornton headed on Billy Bennett's cross.

Leek regained the lead on the hour when James Askey headed in a free kick but Wiggins-Thomas levelled the scores again four minutes later when he reacted quickly to steer Bennett's cross in.

In an entertaining game the result was in doubt until the end as both sides went for the win, Deeney saving from Dan Cope and Martin saving Ben Hutchinson's shot with his legs.

The team picked up two worrying injuries: Rob Darkin sustained a head injury in the first half and played the entire second half with a bandaged head and Bennett was taken off on a stretcher shortly before the end although his injury was later diagnosed as a dead leg.

It was a good point against a useful looking Leek side who have been one of the leading clubs in the league for the last few seasons and will put the players into good heart for Tuesday night's trip to Tividale.

Basford: Deeney, Boafo, Bennett (Meikle 91), Thornton, Darkin, Myers, Grantham, Grayson (Hollis 66), Wiggins-Thomas, Hutchinson, Anderson.
subs not used: Shannon-Lewis, Kelleher, McCormick.
