Basford’s Home Woes Continue As Sheffield Take The Points
United remain with just one home league win so far this season, after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Sheffield FC at Greenwich Avenue on Tuesday Night.

New dual-signing from Dunkirk Billy Bennett made his debut in defence, whilst Rhys Myers returned at centre half, after being cup tied for Saturday’s FA Cup loss against Sporting Khalsa.
The three remaining ever-present players this season were all absent from the starting eleven, with David Boafo and Ash Grayson being dropped to the bench, whilst captain Deon Meikle missed out through injury.
Cory Grantham and Blair Anderson both returned to the starting line-up after featuring on the bench in the FA Cup, to complete a much-changed line-up for manager Martin Carruthers.
Despite both sides enjoying good spells of possession, neither could muster a shot on target in the first 45 minutes, although United did impress when going forward, with Anderson and Gratham looking lively on the flanks, whilst Wiggins-Thomas and Hutchinson were causing problems for the Sheffield backline.
Basford’s first real chance of the half came on 38 minutes, when Ben Hutchinson got on the end of an excellent Cory Grantham cross from the right wing but the imposing striker’s boot directed the ball up and wide from 8 yards out.
The visitors certainly had plenty of pace in the final third but were limited to speculative long range efforts, as the United defence were able to cope with the Sheffield threat, with debutant Bennett impressing on the left, when in possession.
The scoring was opened on 57 minutes when after the ball remained in and around the box after a Sheffield corner, the ball fell perfectly for Conor Glavin to slot the ball past a hapless Saul Deeney.
A good save on 66 minutes from stand-in captain Deeney, pushing away a shot from distance kept Basford in the game but only for another four minutes, as a visiting striker’s miscued shot landed in the United goal, after Deeney was thrown off the ball’s path by the scuffed effort.
To their credit, Carruthers side are certainly not the type to give up on any game and after pushing forward trying to secure a lifeline, Grantham was brought down after cutting into the Sheffield penalty area on 86 minutes.
Hutchinson’s penalty struck the foot of the post before hitting the keeper, with the ball then braking free just long enough for the former Middlesbrough frontman to scramble home the rebound.
Basford continued to throw everything forward in the dying minutes, trying to carve out one final chance but it wasn’t forthcoming and they were once again left scratching their heads as to why they have already suffered four home defeats so far this season.
United will now look to bounce back on their debut in the FA Trophy at AFC Rushden & Diamonds on Saturday afternoon, with a 3pm kick-off.
