With one eye on Saturday’s big FA Cup home tie with Sporting Khalsa, manager Martin Carruthers made a number of changes to his starting side, leaving out Jermaine Hollis and Rob Darkin, replacing them with recent signing from Sheffield FC Rhys Myers and Josh Thornton.
Cory Grantham, Ben Hutchinson and Blair Anderson we’re also given the nod to start, with Tyrell Shannon-Lewis and Stuart Hendrie both absent.
After making their first starts for the club against Coalville Town on Saturday, Jack Wood and Kirmani Smith were dropped to the bench, whilst fellow youngster Gino Kelleher also started as a substitute for the first time this season.
A quiet start to the game saw both sides testing the water early on, with the first chance of the game coming on 14 minutes, when Anderson’s cross from the left was headed just wide by Reuben Wiggins-Thomas.
Slowly the game began to spring into life and Saul Deeney proved his was in fine form again, when he did well to stop Michael Frew’s 19th minute effort.
However, the Irish custodian could do nothing to stop the visitors taking the lead six minutes later, as Josh Moreman fired Spalding in front after the Basford defence struggled to clear their lines.
It took just four minutes for Basford to find an equaliser, after Spalding defender Ross Watson directed a cross away from his own goalkeeper and into his own net.
Hutchinson then tested the Spalding keeper’s reflexes on 32 minutes, with the former Middlesbrough man’s low, long-distance effort forcing the visiting custodian into a fine save at his right-hand post.
But it was the Spalding who regained the advantage on a minute left in the half, with Moreman netting his second after his shot took a wicked deflection off the lunging Myers.
Carruthers’ side came out with renewed vigour in the second half and almost responded inside the first two minutes after they were given a free-kick right on the edge of the visitors’ box but Hutchinson could not recreate his heroics of Gresley and Chasetown, with his powerful effort just going wide of the net.
Basford went on to dominate the half, looking to push on for the equalising goal, whilst Spalding made few forays forward and seemed keen to try and preserve their lead, which at times led to some scrappy football but at no stage did Basford look out of the game.
On 72 minutes, Basford almost found their equaliser after Hutchinson’ low strike from 20 yards struck the foot of the Spalding post and then trickled out of play.
Basford continued to push on and they claimed their reward on 80 minutes, when debutant Myers was on hand to poke the ball home, after Spalding were unable to despatch the ball from their penalty area.
So, the first draw of the season for Carruthers’ side and lots of positives to be taken from a much-improved second half performance.
