United get a great win and video online

Nothing comes easy in the MFL as Basford were made to work extremely hard for 3 priceless points last night v Brocton. Josh Thornton late winner 80min

Starting off very well Fabian Smith marked his return to central midfield with not only a fine display but a brilliant opening strike on 3 minutes to settle any self doubts after Saturdays loss. Picking a loose ball up just outside the box Smith only had one thought and picked his spot with a beauty.

With Basford flying it was the brilliance of visiting keeper Calum Barrett who kept Brocton in the game. His brilliant point blank save from Stuart Hendrie close range header the pick, although the keeper had a few more in his locker.

Only disappointment of a fine Basford 1st half was the half time advantage should have been larger.

2nd period a vast change as the visitors found a very good passing game and pinned Basford back for long periods. The culminated in an equaliser on 58 minutes as Sam Bell swept home a fine effort at the back post for 1-1.

With the stakes so high for both teams as somehow Brocton in a relegation struggle the match became stretched. United's Rob Darkin had a great strike saved by Barrett but then at the other end fabulous work by Saul Deeney and Dion Miekle somehow kept out a double effort on goal.

As United began to fear the likelihood of dropped points it was the brilliance of Ryan Whitehurst on 80 minutes who fashioned the winner. Great persistence to get to the by line and square for the excellent Josh Thornton to slide home for 2-1.

Still time for the visitors to ask some serious questions of the United backline who stood firm admirably to hold out for 3 very important points.

How important these 3 points will be only time will tell over the last 6 further games of the campaign but no questioning the character of the starting 11 who played the whole game and showed great desire and togetherness.

Next big battle sees 3rd place Lye Town roll into Greenwich Avenue Sat for a 3pm ko like all remaining this one is so crucial so any extra support especially with no Senior pro games Sat would be a big boost.

Finally delight at last nights attendance a shade under 3 figures which considering the very poor weather conditions was a brilliant effort and we thank all those in attendance. As most regulars this season will vouch you get good value for money at Greenwich Avenue as the games are mostly very entertaining so keep the support coming.

Therefore based on last nights attendance a good start to the clubs contribution to Lee Hendrie Charity cause and 2 more home games to bump this figure up.
