Basford win on the road at Coventry Spinx

United recorded a hard fought victory away to Coventry Spinx to move back to the top of the MFL.

A rock solid performance saw Basford come away from a difficult Coventry Spinx venue with 3 priceless points and move back to the top of the MFL.
United manager Martin Carruthers took the bold decision to effectively surrender league cup aspirations last Tuesday v Long Eaton to rest no less than 7 players who started the Sat game against Boldmere St Michael. The decision looked well justified with all players returning as United looked fresh, and registered a fine performance at a ground that so far this season has seen Lye Town, Coleshill Town & Long Eaton fail to secure maximum points.
Going back to almost the same 11 who started against Boldmere The only major change saw Jahred Russell who did really well Tuesday replace the unavailable Robson Doolan.
On a surface that looked ok at the outset but quickly begin to cut up very badly, it was surprising how well United managed to move the ball. Early chances saw Stuart Hendrie almost catch out the home keeper from an in swinging cross. From the corner United Captain Aaron Webster should have opened the scoring with a point blank header that cleared the bar from 6 yards. Next up keeper Pond was called to take the ball off Ryan Whitehurst as the striker bore down on goal. United though got the deserved opener on 12 minutes. Lee Hendrie split the home defence with a great ball to play in Ruben Wiggins-Thomas, and just like his 1st and 2nd last week the inform striker galloped clear and placed his effort low past the advancing keeper for 1-0 via a fine finish. Basford continued to ask most of the questions and were good value for the 2nd although the home side were aggrieved with the officials on this one. A deep free kick saw home keeper Pond spill the cross under heavy pressure allowing Wiggins-Thomas to tap home for 2-0, with the home team looking for an infringement on their keeper that never came. Despite a comfortable start for Basford the home side began to come back into the game and United left back Dan Fletcher had all on the keep check of Coventry flying winger Ash Cain who looked a player. It was no surprise most of Coventry’s good stuff on the day came from the winger. As the game entered the last 5 of the half the home side had 3 great chances to get on the score sheet, all repelled by the brilliant Saul Deeney. The 1st after a good Coventry build up saw a striker place his effort for the bottom corner and Deeney go low to parry. The 2nd though was nothing less than world-class. Downie put in an un-defendable low cross that was stabbed goal bound from 6 yards that somehow Deeney showed fabulous reflexes to keep out. Moments later again the winger caused havoc with a low cross that this time Denney and defenders managed to shut out.
United going in at the break 2-0 was a fine effort but in the latter stages of the half pretty clear much work to do.
Early stages of the 2nd period saw the game boil over on 50 minutes with a home dismissal. After a dangerous tackle from behind on Wiggins-Thomas in the ensuing afters from both teams a Coventry player was dismissed for clear use of his head in an aggressive manner that felled Fabian Smith.
The home side frustrations were heightened after Aaron Webster was allowed to net a quick free kick on the edge of the box with the keeper still lining up his wall to net for 3-0 on 53 minutes.
With effectively the game effectively over at 3-0 against a 10 man home team Basford made the numerical advantage count over the last further 35 minutes adding two further goals.
Basford netted a great team goal on 60 minutes as a long period of possession saw Fabian Smith thread a fine ball to Stuart Hendrie. Hendrie’s turn was exquisite and took him through on goal to finish with a fine strike for 4-0.
With United adding a 5th 4 minutes later it was fine link up between Wiggins-Thomas and Stuart Hendrie that saw the latter touch in after a low cross.
Credit to the home side & the 10 men who didn’t capitulate and restricted United to one further fine chance via a Josh Thornton Strike that cannoned off the bar.
Worrying loss towards the end of the game saw skipper Aaron Webster suffer a hamstring injury that required long treatment could side line him for a lengthy period of possibly 4-6 weeks.
The injury took the gloss off a fine win that was far more difficult that the score line. Two clean sheets on the bounce now that corresponds with the return of Saul Deeney whose experience and distribution keeps all others calm especially against strong opposition.
Final word for youngster Jahred Russell came in Tuesday and did really well and likewise yesterday didn’t put a foot wrong. With the top 2 off and the chasing pack including Lye Town suffering damaging losses then the contenders are whittling down from the pretenders. However with still 15 plus games to go a lot of football left in this season.

United have a free week before entertaining Alvechurch at Greenwich Avenue next Sat in a game the visitors won 2-1 at there place so Basford cannot afford any dropping of standards.
