Despite a perfect start of a goal inside 1 minute Basford had to settle for a score draw against Hucknall. United on too many occasions in this game got in excellent positions to finish but woefully failed to trouble the score sheet. With United registering a far improved second period it was only the final third that we did not deliver, as we missed some absolute gilt edge chances to make the game safe.On no less than 6 occasions efforts through on goal were not converted, with most occasions composure lacking at key moments.
Hucknall keeper Harvey was also a formidable barrier and made a string of superb stops most of which from point blank. However the keeper was helpless as Reggie Royce rounded him, but tripped over his own feet and failed to roll home into an empty net from 3 yards. The game also had controversy as late on Ryan Johnson put over a great cross, for Courtney Hastings to power home a header for the winner. The goal though was wiped off as referee Kevin Guise had no alternative but to take the ruling of the assistant official. The linesman out of position and 20 yards away viewed that the ball had gone out for a goal kick before Ryan Johnson crossed. How the official could judge this given his distance, and the fact that Ryan was shielding his view of the ball was a tough call. The consensus in the ground from supporters of both clubs in close proximity was that the decision was very poor and the ball was no way over the touch line, and with not one Hucknall player appealing that the ball was out is usually a good indicator.
However it could have been a lot worse as Hucknall were almost handed victory late in the game with two efforts as United almost pressed the self destruct button through and lack of communication. Earlier in the day Ben Middleton gave us the perfect start with a sharp finish to flick home a fine cross inside 1 minute.United failed to capitalise and gave away a really soft equaliser from a corner converted by a free header by Scott Peach on 29 minutes. Failure to place a defender on the back post proved crucial as he would have been in position to clear easily. Not many top performances on the day which may have been a factor of playing a game 48 hours earlier but Martin Holt,Gary Willows and Ash Dyce all registered superb performances.
