Weekly Round Up 3-4 March : Vets beat snow (and Heanor)

6 months ago By Neil McGowan

The Vets were the only Basford side to overcome the snow and ice to get a competitive game in at the weekend, a 6-0 win over Heanor Town.

Basford United Veterans took on Heanor Town at Greenwich Avenue on Sunday, all the hard work on Friday by Basford and NCFC staff ensured the pitch was in perfect condition.

Again the team had key players unavailable due to work commitments and illness but still managed to field a strong squad.

Basford showed their match intentions with a 4-3-3 formation, although it was string of misses that kept the score at 0-0, the deadlock was eventually broken in the 25th minute when a shot from outside the box from Jay Lee Hodgson found the bottom corner.

The second goal came ten minutes later when a well worked move and cross found the head of Damien Rennicks taking Basford into a comfortable half time lead of 2-0.

One change at halftime saw the introduction of Nicky Kennerdale for Rennicks and it was Kennerdale who netted the third with a powerful shot from inside the box, this was the cushion needed and from that point on it was a matter of how many would Basford score.

Further goals from Kennerdale, Freestone and the impressive Whitman saw Basford come out 6-0 winners and increase their lead at the top of the table to seven points.

Stan Mitchell commented:
“Overall the performance got the result it deserved and the league title is ours to lose but there’s some big games coming up thick and fast with league games to rearrange along with National Cup games to fulfil and win if we are to progress into the knockout stages.”
