Evo- Stik Northern Premier League Division one South
Lincoln United 1 v 0 Basford United
Goal Rob Norris 81min
Despite a manful effort an undermanned Basford United team fresh from achieving promotion Sat lost late away 48 hours later to Lincoln to help the home sides late playoff push.
With Basford missing no fewer than 7 starters from Saturday, through adversity comes opportunity and the mainly young brigade gave a great display against probably the form team of the Evo-Stik South. Great testimony that no less than 4 under 19 players started the game for Basford and 2 of them Colin Lewis & Louis Tomlinson were making 1st start league debuts. With a great sight for all United fans to see Rob Darkin forced into making his 1st start of the season after last years serious injury then the talented defender asked to fill an unaccustomed full back role gave a good showing. Indeed had it not have been for a wonder night for the home keeper Michael Emery who pulled off many brilliant saves on the night then chances are Basford would have won the game. The pick of the saves was the headline photo where Sub Matt Thornhill,s deft header looked a certain goal until the keeper somehow got something on it to claw it wide. With James Reid peppering the keeper all 2nd half with strikes and Cory Grantham also denied point blank it looked likely a blank score sheet would end the game.
However the home side knew a draw would probably be no good for there playoff chances and the only time the United backline went to sleep all evening the home side went in front. Failing to stop a cross at source then this was the catalyst for one of the smallest players on the pitch Rob Norris to head home from 6 yards and give debutant 16 year old keeper Colin Lewis no chance with 9 minutes remaining.
Unable to pull a equaliser back United fell to only the 3rd defeat of the campaign.
With promotion now secured the magic number is 7 points to mathematically seal the title whilst a point last night would have been a brilliant effort Basford now turn attention to Thursday night and a visit to local rivals Carlton Town. With a significant downpour last night it will be highly likely this game might be in doubt. After Thursday Basford travel to Doncaster to playoff Frickley Athletic who still have very much an eye on the 2nd automatic spot.
Thanks to a fair few Basford United supporters who made teh journey to Lincoln last night in what were awful wet conditions.
