A fine reply from Basford last night to start a run of 5 games in 16 days progressing to the Quarter Finals of the Integro Doodson League Cup, Goals from James Reid (Penalty) Kieran Fenton & Liam Hearn sealed in a fine victory in a great game that was a lot closer than the score suggests.

In a lively opening, both sides hit the post, Courey Grantham for Basford and Lee Cropper for the visitors.

Basford took a 28th minute lead, James Reid scoring from the penalty spot after Grantham had been brought down.

Basford stepped up a gear in the second half and put Kidsgrove under pressure, Aidan Austin firing against the post.

Kieran Fenton doubled the lead in the 74th minute, heading in Reid’s corner (Headline photo off to celebrate) and three minutes later Liam Hearn slotted home at the far post from Lewis Carr’s cross to seal a great victory.

United Mgt Martin Carruthers & Mark Clifford were pleased on many fronts with the performance, but the remergence of the returning Cory Grantham returning from injury, and a silky display from returning midfielder Matt Thornhill were major highlights.
Special word for youngster Louis Tomlinson on his 1st team starting debut and the youngster put in an assured performance and looks a great prospect.

Basford will look to build on this good showing entertaining the other Stoke based Evo-Stik side Newcastle Town FC at Greenwich Avenue on Sat 3pm ko.
