Road to Wembley starts on Friday

Basford United meet Staveley Miners Welfare in a FA Cup First Qualifying Round tie on Friday at Greenwich Avenue (7.45).

Looking forwards to the game Martin Carruthers said:
“Staveley are a strong side, who have a good blend of youth and experience and will be very well organised.

“We played them in the Cup last year and really had to battle before winning 1 - 0 and this game will be no different. This is the FA Cup, league positions don’t matter, what counts is the performance on the day and who has the desire to win.

“Like ourselves Staveley will be going all out for a win as the Cup means so much to clubs at our level. They have an excellent manager in Brett Marshall who will make sure they are well prepared for the game, also we will be coming up against Robson Doolan, a former Basford player who will be keen to do well against us.

“We have the quality in our side and really need to impose ourselves on the game if we are to progress.”

Looking back on Tuesday night’s 1-0 defeat at Buxton, Carruthers said:
“It was very similar to our defeats against Hyde and Hednesford, we were punished for a moment of slackness, during which we conceded a crucial goal.

“In these opening games, we are really learning lessons in this league and what it takes to succeed at this level. We are being punished for mistakes that we would have got away with last year.

“Overall though, I was very happy with the way that we played, and told the players so at the end. If we carry on playing like that we will survive in this league and give ourselves a platform to build on and go forward.”

Admission: £7 Adults, £5 concessions and £1 under 16s.
Supporters please note that season tickets and members cards are not valid for this game – it is pay on the day.

If the game ends in a draw the replay will be next Wednesday, 12 September, at Staveley’s Inkersall Road ground, kick off 7.45.
