Positives for Academy teams despite defeats

9 months ago By Neil McGowan

Although Academy second and third teams suffereds defeats in midweek, there were many good points to be taken from the performances

Defeats for Basford United Academy team 2 and 3 this week had mixed emotions.

Team 2 had a tough away game against Lincoln College who had taken a point on the reverse fixture and already defeated Basford United’s 1st team in the league cup.

They lost the fixture 4-0 which was a disappointing result but with some good football being played lacked end product and after going two goals down in the first 5 minutes from set plays, it was always going to be an upward task.

Basford United team 3, after some really heavy defeats and very low on confidence, had a tough game to Long Eaton Academy at home on the excellent Basford surface.

The game started brightly with Long Eaton having the lion share of the possession but excellent and well drilled defending kept the efforts on goal to minimum.

Basford took an early lead after soaking up pressure to break and score an excellent team goal from young wide player Barakel Thomas. This goal injected confidence and it was Basford in the ascendancy and could have had a couple more but for good saves from the oppositions goal keeper.
Long Eaton got back on level terms through a mistake at the back but that was short lived when another excellent move resulted in Basford going 2-1 up through Kasim Mirza.

The second half sawn Basford play some excellent football and they were unlucky not to go 3-1 up and see off Long Eaton but unfortunately tired legs and some good football resulted in Long Eaton equalising.

Basford should have seen the game out but it wasn’t to be, Long Eaton scoring the winner in the closing minutes which deflated the players but they could be proud as this is a game they competed in for 90 minutes and with a bit of luck the result could have been different.

Coach Craig Armstrong said after the defeat
“We came so close to getting an excellent result that these boys deserved but it wasn’t to be."
