By Neil McGowan

Basford United lost 2-1 at Grantham Town, Deon Meikle scoring, but the defeat owed much to a superb goalkeeping display from the home keeper.

Basford made two changes to the team that started last Saturday against Warrington, Deon Miekle replacing the injured Cieran Keane and Rev James coming in for Zak Goodson, who missed the game through illness.

United made an impressive start, pushing the home defence back and just under five minutes in Matt Thornhill saw his shot deflected wide. His corner kick then rebounded off the post to Nat Watson who couldn’t keep his shot down.

Watson then again shot over after being played in by Meikle.

James was testing the home defence with his runs down the wing and on 19th minutes he was pushed in the box for a clear penalty. James Reid’s spot kick was excellently saved by Jordan Wright.

Three minutes later Grantham were ahead, a swift counter attack from a Basford corner leaving Danny Durkin to feed Bradley Fortnum-Tomlinson who fired past Kieran Preston.
In the 33rd minute Shaun Harrad and Durkin combined well on the edge of box and Durkin's shot hit the outside of the post.

Basford pushed forward and Reid saw his shot blocked. As the interval approached so the pressure increased, Greg Tempest and Reid both being denied by saves from Wright.

The second half opened in the same manner as the first had ended with Basford pressure.

After a corner was headed against the bar Tempest fired the rebound into the side netting then Wright pulled off a memorable double save from first Jack Thomas and then Thornhill.

Again the second half followed the pattern of the first with Basford pressure followed by a home goal, Shaun Harrad being given the freedom of the penalty area to head in from 12 yards after 54 minutes.

Deon Meikle headed in to reduce the deficit on 65 minutes.

Encouraged by the goal, Basford poured forward, Kole Lambert being brought down for a free kick which Thornhill fired over, Wright then produced another fine save to deny Thomas, turning his shot over.

Lambert headed over then Watson was off target with a chance.

Basford: Kieran Preston, Liam Bateman, Deon Miekle, Matt Thornhill, Stef Galinski (capt), Dom Roma, Jack Thomas, Greg Tempest, Nat Watson Revarnelle James (Kole Lambert 64), James Reid.
Subs not used: Shick Ndong, Joe Wroughton, Michael Leslie, Saul Deeney.
