Notts FA Senior Cup Third Round Basford United 6 Clifton All Whites 3

Kieran Wells scored four times & Aiden Austin a brace as Basford came from behind to win
a thrilling Notts Senior Cup 3rd Round tie.
Martin Carruthers unlike the league cup last week this time went very much his 1st team squad as opposed to the Academy with only Liam Hearn, James Reid Dom Roma & Rob Duffy missing from Saturdays starting line up. Any thoughts of a comfortable night were quickly dispatched as Clifton flew out of the blocks and were good value for a 2-0 advantage after 31 minutes, that left the Basford faithful a little concerned to say the least. Taking a fifth minute lead through
Cameron Gray’s shot from thirty yards Clifton started well. Despite some top saves from Clifton keeper Alex Smith The visitors doubled their lead through ex United favourite Tyrelle Shannon-Lewis after 31 minutes via a 2nd effort from outside the box that beat United keeper Saul Deeney for 0-2.

Basford ramped up the pressure and Kieran Wells reduced the arrears from close
range on 35 minutes following Ash Grayson’s low cross (headline Photo). Aidan Austin
turned in Fernando Bell-Toxtle’s corner to level two minutes before the
break to make it 2-2.
Any thought the visitors would fall away 2nd period were quickly outdone as Niall O’Rafferty restored Clifton’s lead from ten yards on 46 minutes. In the right place to finish via a neat side foot volley from close range to restore the advantage at 2-3.
United though applied the pressure & Kieran Wells tied the scores after 63 minutes forcing home from close range. Kieran Wells gave Basford its 1st lead of the evening as he latched onto a long through ball to round Smith and finish with a fine strike on the angle to complete a fine hat trick. After 76 minutes Wells powered home his fourth of the night as Basford took control.
Ten minutes from time Aiden Austin scored his second of the night with a well-placed strike and then went close to a hat trick, firing just past the post.
The late goals flattered Basford as the visitors were well in this game until the last 15 minutes.
Well played Clifton a great club and we do wish them well for the remainder of the season in the EMCL.
So Basford progress to the Notts Senior Cup Quarter Finals and keep alive trophy aspirations on 3 fronts.
Sat United make the long trip to Market Drayton for an Evo-Stik South division fixture. Coach departs 11.15 and we have 4 spare seats remaining for any late interest.
