You couldn't have scripted this one as Basford showed character abound to come from behind and move within 4 points of the Evo-Stik South Division Title, after a thrilling 3-2 away win at a gallant Carlton Town last night. The Champions elect though would not be denied and willed on by a big following, summoned up the energy to not only draw level but to clinch the victory with the last kick of the game. Enter Kieran Fenton a player who has grown in stature over the course of the season with some brilliant defensive displays, and who has popped up with crucial goals over the course of the campaign. Remember 96 minutes away to promotion chasing Bedworth United via a towering header ? This one was every bit as good but far more important. The video will no doubt show the contribution of midfield playmaker Matt Thornhill who in the build up won the ball and delivered a tantalising cross that Fenton met with a brilliant header, & the celebrations both on the pitch & on the touchlines was nothing short of ecstatic.

It was harsh on Carlton who had contributed to an entertaining local derby and it was a big ask for both teams to play the 2nd midweek game of the week so a stunning effort.

The latter parts of this game should not detract what a good game it was and the quality of football on show from both sides was very good.

Basford drew first blood, Rob Duffy heading in Matt Thornhill’s corner at the far post seven minutes before half time. Special word for 16 year old Goal keeper youngster Colin Lewis who made a couple of really decent 1st half saves deputising for Saul Deeney. In 2 games played the youngster has shown real promise and will no doubt build in confidence.

Carlton turned the game around with 2 goals in 3 minutes early in the second half. Tyler Blake headed in on 50 minutes, then Jordan Wilson scored with a fierce rising shot that took a heavy deflection.

Liam Hearn levelled with 14 minutes remaining, scoring his 32nd goal of the season with a well placed fin ish at the back post. This set up the unbeleivable finish & make the title requirement 4 points with 5 games remaining.

It like all teams in the Evo-Stik is so difficult to manage players during this highly demanding period, but without question managers Martin Carruthers & Mark Clifford pulled an absolute master stroke last night in keeping and introducing pace & energy in the form of Fernando Bell-Toxtle, Harry Wakefield & Cory Grantham for the last 30 minutes. Against tiring defenders this was a major factor in the comeback, but also the will of this group should not be doubted as amazing spirit & desire.

Final point the Chairman asked for a good following for the game and visiting Basford supporters turned up in excellent numbers last night & likewise were the key to the victory with your support & encouragement.
Next up Sat as tough as it gets away to promotion chasing Frickley who will be rested up after last nights postponement. This is followed by Thursday visit to Market Drayton as United go in search of the 4 points.
