Although Saturday will be the first meeting between the teams there are lots of links between Basford United and Kettering Town.

Poppies striker Aaron O’Connor hails from Bulwell and is well known to our players. He has played for, amongst others, llkeston Town, Scunthorpe United, Mansfield Town, Gresley Rovers and Nuneaton Borough. At Mansfield he was a team mate of Basford player / coach Rob Duffy.

Rob Duffy played for Kettering under the managership of Paul Gascoigne. Gazza’s reign as Poppies manager lasted just 39 days in November / December 2005

A family affair - the Miekle brothers may find themselves in direct opposition - Deon (Basford) and Lindon (Kettering). Lindon has an FA Cup pedigree, scoring one of Eastwood Town’s goals in their win over Wycombe Wanderers in 2008-09, a run that was ended by a Third Round proper defeat at Kettering Town.

Kettering first team coach John Ramshaw is well known in the area and has guided the progress of several Basford players. He has managed Sutton Town, Hucknall Town, Eastwood Town as well as coaching at Notts County and Mansfield Town. He also managed a South Notts Schools under 13 representative team back in 1978 that included a youthful Chris Munroe, now better known as Basford chairman.
