End of a great Run as United lose at Stamford (VIDEO NOW ON LINE)

By Match reporter

It proved unlucky 28 as Basford tasted league defeat for the 1st time this 2017-18 season at Stamford yesterday & end a proud run.

Against a strong playoff chasing opponent in Stamford, Basford never quite recovered from the substantial loss of play maker James Reid, who was dismissed on 8 minutes for a handball on the line. Despite a manful effort from the 10 men it just didn’t prove enough as the home side won a really great game for a big crowd.

Stamford 3 Basford United 1

Playing against a strong wind both Keepers had a really difficult day in the swirling wind. The 8th minute defining incident saw the excellent Saul Deeney fail to deal with a swirling corner, & an instinctive reaction from Reid (Headline Photo) on the line cost us the player and a penalty conceded smashed home by Bradley Fortnam-Tomlinson 0-1.

Against the 10 for the rest of the half the home side failed to really take advantage of the conditions and build on the 1-0 with only Putman forcing a meaningful save from Deeney to leave Basford well in the game at the interval at 0-1.

2nd period the 10 men pinned the home side deep in their box for long periods and some gilt edge chances were not converted, with Dion Miekle point blank effort & a Liam Hearn header cleared off the line the most clear cut. Fernando Bell-Toxtle netted direct from a corner but the goal was ruled out for an alleged foul on Danny Haystead & Rob Duffy lofted a good chance over. The home side also had aerial success as Saul Deeney uncharacteristically struggled like Danny Haystead to the aerially wind affected delivery.

With the game approaching its latter stages the home side clinically hit on the counter to kill the game. 80 minutes Ben George scored Stamford’s 2nd forcing the ball over the line from Jordan Smith’s cross .
Liam Hearn put Basford back in the game heading home on 86 minutes which was the signal to pour forward in search of a late leveller.

95 minute of added time Stamford broke away & Liam Adams beat Saul Deeney to the ball to score and spark brilliant scenes of happiness from home supporters.
So the long unbeaten run is over but has been a fabulous experience propelling us nationally in the process as the only unbeaten club at Step 4 right up to the Premier League and without question adeed to our following on social media.
For United the bounce back is crucial as a run of 5 games in 16 days in all 3 trophies is a really key part of the season. Dates for your diary
