After an illustrious career in the professional and a high level semi professional game, player coach Rob Duffy netted a fine header on 46 minutes to open his league account for the club. The big striker whose season was ended on his debut last season via an Achilles tear planted home a fine header to separate the teams in a really good game at the Avenue yesterday.

Whilst its now 20 league unbeaten for Basford this one was high up there from a victory standpoint as Basford were a little off the pace first period, but turned it on 2nd period. Visiting keeper Danny Roberts likes Greenwich Avenue, and after turning in a stunning performance last season here for Witton Albion in a crucial win for them, may have had similar thoughts yesterday as his heroics totalled at least 6 brilliant stops. It was by no means though one way and United keeper Saul Deeney, whilst no where near as busy as Roberts, also was called upon to pull off 2 brilliant stops at crucial points in the game.
In a lively game in freezing conditions, both teams created chances. Belper Keeper Roberts set the tone for the day with a brilliant reaction save to keep out Dion Miekle volley on 10 minutes. The visitors though grew into the game and Deeney had to be at his best to turn Alex Steadmans effort onto the base of the post as Basfords rear guard was put under some sustained pressure. Level at 0-0 at the interval the perfect start to the 2nd period as Rob Duffy powered home a well placed header from James Reids corner for 1-0. After this it was over to the keepers as Danny Roberts pulled off a string of brilliant saves, with the pick being saves from James Reid and Kieran Wells as Basford pressed for a 2 goal margin. Failure to secure could have proved costlly as United were reliant on Saul Deeney for a brilliant tip over from Alex Hanahan that preserve the clean sheet, and guaranteed 3 more priceless points in the Evo-Stik South title race as once again the United rear guard kept a clean sheet .
Great game this one and 2 good teams Ex Basford skipper & new Belper manager Aaron Webster has a good group to develop and we wish him and Belper all the best.
For United it was a great day with all chasers victims of the weather and it allowed the margin at the top to increase to 18 points.
So now we enter the busy Christmas schedule of 4 games in 9 days. All are significant for different reasons and will represent a stiff challenge.
Once again thanks to over support base braving freezing conditions that put paid to our sprinklers due to frozen pipework. Your support is & was crucial for us.
United make the journey to North Sheffield Sat to start the program away to 3rd placed Stocksbridge. With already a full coach for the game then United will take a good following to this big game.
