Basford Vets aim for National Final

11 months ago By Neil McGowan

Basford United Veterans play Manor Vets at Greenwich Avenue on Sunday (2.0) in the Southern Final of the Umbro National Veterans over 40s Masters.

Manor are a London-based side who have won the competition twice in the last three seasons. They boast a host of ex professionals in their squad including Jamie Lawrence (ex Sunderland & Leicester) and Paul Merson (Ex Arsenal, Villa and England).

The competition featured 32 teams from all over the UK.

Basford’s original group consisted of six teams with games against sides from Manchester, Liverpool, Huddersfield and Derbyshire. When all the games were completed the teams then split off into two further groups with the top teams going through to the Masters Competition and the lower teams going onto the Championship Competition.

Basford went through to the Masters Competition, which is split into North and South, being drawn in the South Group, beating Shropshire side Diffusion Vets 7-1 in the last round.

The winner of the Southern final will meet the winner of the Northern final in the national Final which will take place at Lilleshall on 11 June.

Basford Vets are currently sitting top of the East Midlands Veterans Premier League with one game left to play with a nine point advantage and a plus goal difference of +26 so this season could end in an impressive double come the 11 June.

Joint team manager Stan Mitchell said:

“This is Basford Vets over 40s third year in the competition where we have fallen at the quarter final stage the last two years. This season we have added more quality to the squad.

“Manor are a very good side, but I know the strengths of my squad and on our day, I would put this same squad out against any Vets teams in the country. I do have players who are unavailable who would have been included, but due to injuries and other commitments they are unavailable, Craig Armstrong, Ian Robinson, Wayne Hallcro to name but three.”

Admission is £2 but this can be recouped in full on the day by offsetting against purchases from our main bar or snack food outlet.
In what promises to be a great day then why not pay Greenwich Avenue a visit
