Basford United 2 Buxton FC 0

By Jonny Drake

Jack Thomas starred as Liam Hearn’s side won their first game under his management, beating a resilient Buxton side 2-0 at Greenwich Avenue.

Hearn made multiple changes to the squad including bringing in new signing Brad Gascoigne for his debut and was forced to leave energetic Liam Bateman out of the starting eleven following an injury sustained in the warm up.

The first clear cut chance fell to Shaun Harrad who saw his header go over the bar with 15 minutes on the clock. However, just two minutes later the home side too the lead through Jack Thomas. Stefan Galinski carried the ball out from defence following a Buxton corner and gave it to Nat Watson who set an overlapping Jack Thomas through on goal to slot home across keeper Theo Roberts.

It was a period of dominance for Basford who nearly doubled their lead twice before the 25-minute mark. First Matt Thornhill went close with his headed effort and then debutant Brad Gascoigne couldn’t get enough power behind his header to trouble Roberts in the Buxton net.

Basford ended the half as strongly as they began it but were unable to add a second goal to their tally as Watson’s goal was ruled out for offside after he poked home following good work from Fernando Bell-Toxtle down the right-hand side.

Buxton responded well in the second half but it was Basford who continued to look the more likely to score as Thornhill went close direct from a free kick, but it was palmed away by Roberts.

Buxton’s first clear chance fell to Josh Meade but his shot was blocked by multiple Basford bodies. Buxton refused to lie down and almost equalised with 20 minutes to go when Diego Griolamo hit the bar with a fierce shot that could’ve easily found its way into the top left corner of Saul Deeney’s goal.

Soon after, substitute James Dean found himself unmarked in the Basford box but sent his shot high over the bar.

Jack Thomas continued to look dangerous, a last-ditch tackle from Alex Brown was all that kept the central midfielder from scoring a sumptuous volley just five minutes from time. With just one minute to go, Thomas broke free down the right wing and put in a low cross that was diverted into his own net by Brad Roscoe to secure the points for Basford.

In added time Roscoe came close to making up for his mistake when he fired low from long range however his shot rolled just past Deeney’s left post. Following the goal kick, Thornhill fired into the side netting when Zak Goodson set the ball into his path.

The result takes Basford up to eighth, two points behind today’s opponents with a game in hand.
