Dan Jones and Alex Howes were Notts' 1st half goal scorers to send the bulk of the record Basford crowd 946 crowd home happy with the victory. Notts manager Kevin Nolan opted to field two different line-ups in each half .
Jones opened the scoring when his free-kick from a wide position was sliced into his own net by United's Reece Bertram & found its way past Saul Deeney.
Basford responded well and Liam Hearn missed a great chance as he fired point blank against the top of the bar & Lewis Carr planted a header against the bar.
Notts' lead was doubled before the break as Bertram was at fault needlessly conceding possession deep in the Notts box with Basford on the offensive. Notts went the length of the pitch & young midfielder Howes silkily dummied his way past Lewis Carr and finished coolly beyond Saul Deeney.
Moments before the break a pile driver from Ben Hutchinson drew a strong save from Adam Collin.
Second half Notts had chances through Jon Stead and Peter Dearle but saw Curtis Thompson replaced by young winger Remaye Campbell due to a hamstring injury. Basford best chance of the 2nd period saw Liam Hearn played through on goal by Celston Patrocino but denied by a fine save from Fitzsimmon. The unknown Patrocinio continued to catch the eye in the Basford camp with another good showing and is close to be offered a deal.
But 2-0 was how it stayed and a productive afternoon for both camps.
All in all Martin Carruthers was reasonably pleased with yesterdays workout as United build fitness levels with 4 weeks until the start of the new campaign. United expect to welcome back midfielders Matt Thornhill this week with other central midfielders James Reid, Laurie Wilson also available after missing yesterday. Striker Courey Grantham remains side-lined awaiting a scan for what looks like a Hernia issue.
