Basford clinch a fine point at Frickley Athletic (VIDEO NOW ON-LINE)

By Match reporter

Evo Stik Northern Premier League Division One South Frickley Athletic 2 Basford United 2 Goals Hazel 2, Hearn 2

A battling performance of courage and desire was key in Basford getting something out of a difficult away game at 3rd placed Frickley Ath Yesterday. Facing a 4th game in 7 days, manager Martin Carruthers for the fitness safety of his players significantly rotating his starting 11, then nothing less than an outstanding effort especially after being on the back foot for most of the 1st half.

Video of this great game can be viewed at the following link

Two goals from Liam Hearn (headline Photo) , taking his total for the season to 34 took Basford to within 3 points from 4 remaining games for the Evo-Stik NPL South Division title.

The home side were on top from the off & the United rear-guard & a young 16-year-old keeper put in a defiant effort. Keeper Colin Lewis started well and made a fine save in the 1st minute from Reece McGinley. With Dom Roma making a superb last ditch intervention to deny Jacob Hazel a certain goal, & Colin Lewis denying Hazel point blank as the forward went clear then United were defending manfully. Matt Thornhill almost gave United the advantage played through on goal but denied by a fine saving tackle from Ible.

Frickley took a fortunate lead five minutes before half time, Lewis’ delayed too long making a routine clearance, & Hazel charged his clearance down for the ball to roll into the unguarded net for a bad moment for the young keeper learning his football education.

Basford came back strongly in the second period and Liam Hearn levelled after 68 minutes creating space and scoring with a shot from 15 yards after good work from Harry Wakefield & Fernando Bell-Toxtle.

Hearn then turned in Matt Thornhill’s corner on 76 minutes to give Basford the lead at 2-1. For the remaining 14 minutes there was a possibility the title could be won on this day if Alvechurch surrendered a slim 1-0 advantage v Stocksbridge. This wasn’t to be though & the title celebrations are on hold for a few more days as Jacob Hazel tied the scores up on the 90th minute. Turning to fire into the bottom corner from 12 yards he sealed a pulsating 2-2 draw that on the 2nd half Basford performance was a fair reflection.
So the champagne is on hold to possibly Thursday away to Market Drayton Town 7.45pm & the equation is 3 points, unless Alvechurch drop points this midweek v Kidsgrove Ath on Tuesday or Cleethorpes away on Thursday.
Great support yesterday in what was a really intimidating atmosphere but United stood firm to claim a great point.
