Basford were good value for yesterdays 2-1 win v Spalding and were denied a far bigger score line as last seasons Evo-Stik South team of the year Goalkeeper Michael Duggan produced a string of brilliant saves to keep his side in the game.

Duggan though could do little as Basford were gifted a 7th minute lead when Spalding’s Adam Jackson volleyed into his own net at the back post with most wondering given Spalding were in Basford's 2nd strip after a mix up, did he get his bearings wrong as appeared no danger.
Basford held the upper hand on Liam Hearn couldn't finish from a tight angle and then just missed converting a fine cross.
Basford keeper Saul Deeney who must be in line to regain his Evo-Stik South top rated keeper of the year from Duggan, was assured all game and produced a brilliant double save from Lee Beeson’s shot three minutes from the break and the goal bound follow up.

Basford upped the pace in the second half and James Reid’s shot was
cleared off the Spalding line by Jordan Lemon on 47 mins.the timely introduction of the returning Matt Thornhill was a big lift and proved crucial as Basford sought to put the game away. The crucial 2nd goal arrived on 69 min as Matt Thornhill was in the right place to net after a fine through ball from Rob Duffy, who had his best game in a Basford shirt. Duggan then took over as he made 3 brillinat stops to deny a powerful Rob Duffy header and 1 on 1 efforts for Jerry Nash & Liam Hearn. Liam Hearn who worked hard but drew a blank day in front of goal should have netted after rounding Duggan but having his effort cleared off the line.
The visitors reduced the deficit on 90 minutes as Gary King pulled one back for the visitors with the last kick of the game. Any threat of lost points were denied as the official immediately blew for Full time.

A very good performance from Basford but just like last week the game could have been put to bed well before the opposition netted late goals.

Martin Carruthers introduced new signing Fernando Bell-Toxtle for his debut after signing from AFC R&D and the youngster had a good debut. With United now having 3 high class players from the Universities of Nottingham, then the squad is developing a real blend of exciting youngsters and established top quality experienced players.

Match Rating: 3/5

United now have a further week to rest injuries and niggles before a big double header weekend as a tough trip to Newcastel Town on Sat is followed 48 hours later by a visit from AFC Stamford. Both these game will be incredibly tough as Basford look to keep a 15 game unbeaten leasgue record intact.
