Academy share spoils with Diamonds

9 months ago By Neil McGowan

Goals from Harry Wakefield and Levar Gayle earned Basford United Academy a 2-2 draw at AFC Rushden & Diamonds today.

Basford had to make enforced changes to last weeks side as Gipps, Shipton and Jalland were all unavailable and Daws was omitted from the squad.

Prince Mancinelli, Ansu Gaye, Buba Cessay and Shick Ndong were all handed starts on return to the squad.

In a cagey opening start both sides battled to take control of the game. It was Rushden who had the first chance of the game after Cessay failed to clear his lines on the halfway line and the Rushden No. 10 raced through on goal only to fire into the side netting. Both sides were struggling to maintain possession of the ball especially in the midfield areas.

It was on 16 minutes that Rushden broke the deadlock after Basford once again failed to clear their lines and were made to pay. A neat cross from the left was cooly sidefooted away by the Rushden No. 9.

Basford were still trying to gain a foothold in the game and their reward came in the 30th minute. Excellent hold up play from Niall Hylton who then fed Blake Cooke on the left who slipped a perfect through ball for Harry Wakefield who clinically finished low into the corner for 1-1.

Another flowing move and an excellent diagonal pass from Connor Butler found Wakefield on the far right who cut inside to unleash a fierce left footed strike that crashed against the post on 35 minutes. It was Basford who finished the half stronger and Wakefield forced the home keeper into a low near post save right on half time.

It was the hosts who again started the half brighter and they re-took the lead on 55 minutes. Good work down the right side resulted in a neat near post cross that the No. 9 finished from close range for his second of the game.

Basford reacted with 2 subs and it was Mancinelli and Gaye who were replaced by Tarell Peck and Mario Bunnatome.

The changes paid dividend as on 63 minutes a clever flicked header from Cooke found Gayle who sidefooted a cracking volley into the roof of the net.

In a frantic finish both sides tried in vain to get the winner but the final score of 2-2 was a fair result.

Basford: George Sansom, Dru Bamford, Blake Cooke, Ansu Gaye (Tarell Peck-55) Shick Ndong, Connor Butler, Levar Gayle, Buba Cessay, Harry Wakefield, Prince Mancinelli (Mario Bunnatome-55) Niall Hylton (Lattrell Patterson-66)
