Academy lose on penalties

By Neil McGowan

Basford Academy lost 5-3 on penalties to South Shields after a 2-2 draw in their National U19 Alliance Cup Final at Walsall.

It was hard on the team after a fine performance in an excellent game.

Shields led 1-0 at half time thanks to Arran Thompson's 26th minute goal, but two goals in six second half minutes turned the game around.

Richard Wynder hauled Basford level in he 61st minute after Zak Goodson's shot was blocked on the line and Kieran Daws then put them ahead from close range.

The lead did not last very long as David Allasan hit Shields' second of the night on 71 minutes.

Despite chances at both ends there was no further scoring and the game went to penalties, South Shields coming out on top 5-3.
