United dig deep to grind out a great win via a top draw strike from James Reid (Video to follow)

9 months ago By Match reporter

Not many better games at Greenwich Av this season as Basford & Stamford AFC played out a great game won 2-1 by Basford.

Close to call all the way through it looked likely something very special would be needed to separate the sides, and it was United’s James Reid who duly obliged with a brilliant strike 12 minutes from time to win the game.

A flying start by Basford saw Kieran Wells hit the post with a fine header & the home side swept into the lead on 11 minutes as Liam Hearn netted a fine volley from close range.
The visitors though levelled on 36 minutes as Jon Challinor picked his spot with a great strike to send the game in level at the break.

The second half was end to end and Saul Deeney had to make two fabulous saves from fine strikes. The home side also threatened and struck the post, and Rob Duffy put a point blank header just wide. One almighty scramble saw Stamford keeper Danny Haystead keep out Liam Hearn from point blank and then smoother the rebound. With time ticking down its pretty fair to state a point would probably have been as a good point for both but James Reid had other ideas. His 77th minute winner was top draw as he hit home a beauty from 20 yards top corner giving Haystead no chance (Headline Photo James Reid lets fly for the winner). The visitors were not done though and Deeney had to show fine handling and United survive late pressure to gain 3 really crucial points.
A crowd of 241 witnessed this great game and most bar the contingent from Stamford AFC left talking about Reids winner and a fabulous advert for non league football.
A 6 point weekend against 2 strong teams is a great return and who knows if we can close out the month with a win in another tough game Sat away to Romulus, then we might be in contention for our 1st ever the Evo-Stik South,s team of the month award for November, after a possible 100% league record. Martin Carruthers was delighted for the victory but stressed in his post game interview how tough this was and how no complacency will be allowed to enter this squad.
United by all accounts are pretty banged up and the losses of Lewis Carr/Matt Thornhill/Cory Grantham & Laurie Wilson through injury are all big names but it is testimony to the squad and such absences are being negated by some fine performances, for which Jerry Nash continues to impress & youngster Fernando Bell-Toxtle had a good gasme.
Final word on Stamford AFC apart from Alvechurch by the far the best team we have played, and whilst scant consolation they should expect to be in the end of season mix if last nights performance is anything to go by.

Next up a visit to Romulus on Sat but United will only need to remember early this seaso nwith a top v then bottom ended in a 1-1 draw.

Basford can confirm that the club will be putting on coach travel for the Market Drayton (9th Dec) * Stocksbridge PS (23rd Dec) In the spirit of festivities both journeys will be free travel for our loyal band of spectators. Further details to follow in due course.
