Video of this great game and the late drama can be viewed at https://youtu.be/arm21cFhG7k
For 99% of those in attendance yesterday it looked highly likely that a fine display from Leek Town would be the catalyst for the 1st defeat of the season for Basford United at the 25th time of asking. With the visitors going up 2-0 on 78 minutes and really good value unlikely no complaints but plaudits from our camp. This all changed in a frantic ending as somehow United find a way to not only grab a point but secure an unlikely win. Enter youngsters Aidan Austin & Conor Bartle both products of our great City’s Further Educational Universities. Austin a young highly talented lad & former Forest Scholar has found his opportunities limited so far this season from an on fire front line. This time though Aidan came off the bench late and got us back in the game with a brilliantly strike on 81 minutes bending home from 25 yards & providing a lifeline. At 1-2 then it’s the crowd and energy levels that ignite Greenwich Avenue & will us to an injury time equaliser. Enter Conor Bartle another great talent whose 2 long throws have caused panic in the Leek back line. For the 1st one don’t give the South Divisions League top goal scorer Liam Hearn such an opportunity from 5 yards as 99 out of 100 he will score. Forcing home on 91 minutes to level at 2-2 this send the crowd into raptures. So into the 93rd minute a brilliant last ditch tackle from Kieran Fenton who was badly missed today in an uncertain display from the United rear guard not helped by an injury to our talisman Dom Roma saved a certain winner for Leek. With 1 last throw to go into the Leek box the official signalled that would be it prior to Conor Bartle launching his 2nd Exocet into the box that again was not dealt with, and this time our experienced player Coach & striker Rob Duffy who slammed home from 4 yards to send the fans wild and win the game for Basford.
Understandably mixed emotions at the end of the game but Leek Town should be proud of their performance, on what was a fine advert for Non league football, & no doubt on this level of performance they can get what they want out of this season.
For Basford the old saying the ability to win games when not quite at your best is a winning formula, and it was clear for all to see, as a brilliant squad was a little off the races today but made up for it by by desire and spirit.
Earlier in the day with both teams showing attacking intent, the game always promised drama typified by Dom Roma,s excellent goal line clearance . There were chances at both ends before Sam Grimshaw gave Leek a 38th minute lead cutting in from the left and beating Saul Deeney with a rising shot.
Jordan Johnson scored Leek’s second in the 76th minute, beating the offside trap to round Deeney and slot home before the late drama.
