Ash Grayson’s 33rd minute header secured an important victory that sent Basford to the top of the Evo Stik League last night.

As good a 1st half performance as any this season was the platform for a superb victory against a good Leek Town side who no doubt will have high aspirations for the season.

Taking the crowd out of the game early with a solid team display Basford were well worth the advantage on 33 minutes. Ash Grayson continued his run of netting important goals this campaign with another Sat. In the right place to thump home a header from Matt Thornhills corner the ball was past the home keeper before he could react. Just before the break a sweeping move from deep in the Basford final 3rd went the length and should have doubled the advantage as Matt Thornhill glanced wide point blank after excellent set up from Cory Grantham and Liam Hearn.
James Reid came close to making it two early 2nd period with a shot that was inches wide and another that was deflected on to the post with Leek Keeper Ben Chapman helpless.

With the gap a slender 1-0 the home side came roaring back, United defender Dom Roma twice clearing off the line and the defensive unit repelling everything that came into the box. However the best was reserved for the end as ex pro keeper Saul Deeney made one of those saves that was nothing less than world class. Sub James Curley was in the right place to get on the end of a vicious in swinging cross on 88 minutes to glance goal bound at pace from 6 yards, but somehow Deeney not only did amazing to get a hand on it but to also keep it out was brilliant.
United played out the remaining minutes to secure a very important win and the players were very appreciative of visiting supporters who made the journey to Staffordshire in good numbers for the game.
This was the ultimate collective effort by the group with all players in the squad contributing and Management got tactics absolutely spot on.
Special mention for new signing Jerry Nash who really showed excellent potential on the day with his range of passing and his assuredness in protecting the back line, it looks another shrewd bit of transfer business by Martin Carruthers and his Management team.

Another quick turnaround Monday night when we travel to Belper
Town for an Integro League Cup First Round match (7.45) followed by next Saturdays home game against a Bedworth United FC outfit on the up at Greenwich Avenue 3pm.

Congratulations to Basford CFC 1sts who travelled to North Nottingham in the league cup and came away with a 1-0 away win at Kirton to move to the 2nd round courtesy of a Jack Wood goal.
